Advancements in Minecraft

What is an Advancement?

When you complete certain challenges in Minecraft, you earn advancements. These advancements are saved with the world you are playing. Some advancements have prerequisites and can not be earned until you have completed other challenges.

TIP: Advancements are a great way to guide new players through the game.

In Minecraft, you can also use the /advancement command to give or take away an advancement.

Advancements are divided into 5 categories:

  • Adventure
  • The End
  • Nether
  • Husbandry
  • Minecraft

How to Earn an Advancement

When you complete a challenge in Minecraft, you will earn an advancement. Let's show you how to earn the advancement called "Stone Age".

To earn "Stone Age", it is simple. Just mine stone with a pickaxe and then pick up the resulting cobblestone.

Once you have mined the stone with a pickaxe and picked up the cobblestone, you will see the Advancement message "Advancement Made! Stone Age" appear in the top right of the game window. You will also see an advancement message in the Chat window that says "DigMinecraft has made the advancement [Stone Age]".

This message is broadcast to all players on the server.

How to View your Advancements

Advancements are found under the Game Menu in Minecraft. To open the Game Menu, press the esc key in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac).

Then view your advancements by clicking on the Advancements button in the Game Menu.

Your Advancements window should look like this:

The Advancements window shows 5 tabs - one for each category (Adventure, The End, Nether, Husbandry, Minecraft). The Advancements window shows a sort of tree structure with arrows pointing to the next advancements that you can earn.

If you hover over an advancement, you can see the advancement name and the requirements to get the advancement. In this example, the advancement is called "Stone Age" and the requirement is to "Mine stone with your new pickaxe".
