How to Breed Cats in Minecraft

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to breed cats with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In older versions of Minecraft, you would breed ocelots to spawn a kitten. However in newer versions of the game, there is a new type of mob called a cat that is independent of the ocelot. Now, you breed cats (instead of ocelots) to make cute kittens.

Required Materials to Breed Cats

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to breed cats:

Steps to Breed Cats

1. Find Two Tamed Cats

First, you will need to find two tamed cats to breed. The cats must be tamed (and not stray) before you can breed them.

Here are the 10 types of cats that you can breed:

TIP #2: If you are having trouble finding a cat, you can summon a cat using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg.

Your cats will need to be close together when breeding, so we have built a fence to keep our two tamed cats from running away.

2. Use the Raw Fish

You can breed cats using any kind of raw fish such as raw cod or raw salmon. In this tutorial, we will use raw salmon to breed the cats.

Next, with the raw salmon selected in your hot bar, you will need to feed the raw salmon to each of the cats, one at a time.

The game control to use/feed the raw salmon to the cats depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the cats one at a time.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the cats one at a time.
  • For Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the cats one at a time.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the cats one at a time.

As you feed the raw salmon to the cats, you will see red hearts appear over their heads. Each of these cats is entering love mode.

Once you have fed both cats, they will turn to each other and red hearts will continue to appear over their heads.

After a moment, the red hearts will disappear and a cute baby cat (kitten) will be standing next to its parents. The baby cat will be the breed of one of its parents.

TIP: You will have to wait 5 minutes before your cats can breed again.
