How to make a Fence in Minecraft
This Minecraft tutorial explains how to make a fence with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
In Minecraft, you need to build a fence to keep mobs in or out of an area.
Required Materials to make a Fence
There are a few items that you will need to have gathered before you can build a fence.
Fence Items
The first item that you will need to craft is fence. There are different types of fence and each one is made from a different kind of tree. These are the types of fence that you can craft in the game:
Fence Gate
Next, you will need to craft a fence gate. A fence gate swings open and close making it easier for you to get in and out of the fenced area. These are the types of fence gates that you can craft:
Steps to make a Fence
1. Build the Sides of the Fence
Once you have the required materials and added them to your hotbar, find an open area to build your fence.
Select the fence item in the hotbar. In this example, we have selected oak fence and we have 20 of them. Place enough oak fence to build one side of your fence. The game control to place the oak fence depends on the version of Minecraft:
- For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
- For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
- For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
- For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
- For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
- For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
- For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
- For Education Edition, right click on the block.
Next, target the block next to the side of the fence and place another oak fence. The game will automatically create corner posts for your fence when you join two sides.
Continue to place your oak fence until you have built all four sides of the fence with one block left open. This is where you will place your fence gate.
2. Add the Fence Gate
Now, select the fence gate in your hotbar. In this example, we have chosen to use an oak fence gate.
Place the oak fence gate in the empty space in your fence. The game control to place the fence gate depends on the version of Minecraft:
- For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
- For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
- For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
- For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
- For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
