Where to Find a Ruined Portal

In Minecraft, a Ruined Portal is a structure that spawns naturally in the game. It looks like the remains of a Nether Portal with pieces of it missing. It can be found in all biomes in both the Overworld and the Nether dimensions.

TIP: Ruined Portals can be found anywhere including underground or underwater.

Characteristics of the Ruined Portal

Although Ruined Portals can vary in their appearance, they have certain common characteristics. Here are 5 things that you will always find with a Ruined Portal:

1. Broken Frame

Since the Ruined Portal is the remains of a broken (or aged) Nether Portal, there will be a partial frame that is made out of obsidian and crying obsidian:

You can use the existing obsidian to rebuild the Nether Portal, but you must replace the crying obsidian with obsidian (since crying obsidian is not a proper material to construct a Nether Portal).

2. Chest

You will always find a chest (filled with goodies) near the Ruined Portal.

The contents of the chest will vary depending on whether you are in the Overworld or the Nether.

Overworld Chest

In the Overworld, a Ruined Portal chest will contain golden items such as golden boots or a golden helmet. These items will often be enchanted with helpful enchantments such as Frost Walker, Feather Falling, Projectile Protection and Thorns.

Nether Chest

In the Nether, a Ruined Portal chest will contain items that you can use to rebuild the portal such as obsidian, flint and steel, and fire charges.

3. Gold Block

Next to the Ruined Nether, you will always find a block of gold. This is a great way to add gold to your inventory.

4. Magma Block

You will always find at least one magma block close to the Ruined Portal. A Ruined Portal in the Overworld may only have 1 magma block. However, you will probably find multiple magma blocks if the Ruined Portal is in the Nether.

5. Netherrack

When the Ruined Portal is generated, the ground under the Ruined Portal will be replaced with netherrack. This happens both in the Overworld as well as the Nether.

Repair the Ruined Portal

You can easily repair a Ruined Portal so that it can be used again as a working Nether Portal to transport you between the Overworld and Nether.

Here are the steps to repair a Ruined Portal:

1. Rebuild the Obsidian Frame

Start by rebuilding the frame of the portal with obsidian. Be sure to replace all crying obsidian with obsidian since crying obsidian is not a proper building material for a portal frame.

2. Activate the Portal

Next, use either flint and steel or a fire charge to activate the portal. Your Ruined Portal should look like this after it has been repaired back to a working Nether Portal:

Ruined Portal Seeds

You can use a seed to create a world where you spawn near a Ruined Portal:
