How to get a Fern in Survival Mode
You can add a fern to your inventory in Survival mode by finding a fern and cutting it with a pair of shears. So, let's get started!
1. Find a Fern
First, you need to find a fern in your Minecraft world. Ferns are usually found in the Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga or Jungle biomes.

2. Hold the Shears
Next, select your shears in the hotbar so that you are holding them in your hand.
3. Use the Shears
The game control to use the shears to clip the fern depends on the version of Minecraft:
- For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the fern.
- For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the fern.
- For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
- For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
- For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
- For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
- For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the fern.
- For Education Edition, left click and hold on the fern.
You will need to continue to clip with the shears until the fern breaks and a smaller fern floats on the ground.
4. Pick up the Fern
Make sure you pick up the fern before it disappears.
Once you pick up the fern, it will appear in your hotbar.
A fern is a decoration item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
