Background

A trader llama is not the same as a llama in Minecraft, though they have some similarities. Trader llamas are found wandering the game leashed to a wandering trader (there are always one or two trader llamas attached by leads to a wandering trader). The following is a picture of what a trader llama looks like in the game:

trader llama

Hostility Level Neutral Mob
Health Points 15 health points (up to 30 health points)
heart x 7.5 (up to heart x 15)
Where to Find 2 trader llamas will be found leashed to a wandering trader
Weapon None
Attack Method Spits at you
Drops leather 0-2 Leather
chest 1 Chest (if equipped)
carpet 1 Carpet (if equipped)
Experience Points 1-3 experience points
Special Skills Can be tamed and ridden

A trader llama can not wear a saddle or horse armor, but a trader llama will spawn wearing a carpet for decoration. You can also equip a trader llama with a chest and store up to 15 stackable items.

Hostility Level (Neutral)

A trader llama is a neutral mob. The term mob is short for mobile and is used to refer to all living, moving creatures in the game such as chickens, creepers, and trader llamas. Because a trader llama is a neutral mob, it will only attack you in Survival mode if you attack the llama first. It will never attack you in Creative mode.

Health Points

In Minecraft, a trader llama has between 7.5 hearts heart and 15 hearts for health, depending on the type of trader llama. This gives a trader llama 15 and 30 health points (because 1 heart = 2 health points). To kill a trader llama, you need to inflict between 15 and 30 points of damage depending on the trader llama.

Where to Find Trader Llamas

In Minecraft, trader llamas will naturally spawn in the game and these trader llamas will be leashed to a wandering trader. As you play the game, the wandering trader and its trader llamas will come and find you.

If you break the lead between the wandering trader and the trader llama, you can tame and ride the trader llama, just like you can with a regular llama. Because there are a number of ways to unleash a trader llama, you don't need to kill the wandering trader to unleash its trader llamas.

TIP: In Java Edition, you can break the lead by placing a boat next to the trader llama. When the trader llama gets into the boat, the lead will break.

If you are having trouble finding a trader llama, you can summon a trader llama using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg.

Weapon

A trader llama does not carry a weapon.

Attack Method

In Minecraft, if you try to attack a trader llama, it will spit at you causing you damage and then walk away. What is unique about a trader llama is that it will attack hostile mobs, whereas, a normal llama will not.

Behavior

A trader llama will always try to follow the other trader llamas that are leashed to a wandering trader.

Drops

When you kill a trader llama in Minecraft, it will drop leather.

If the trader llama was wearing a chest or carpet, these items would also have been dropped when the trader llama was killed.

Make sure you pick up any dropped items before they disappear. They are useful and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Experience Points

As you play the game, you will gain experience. The most common way to gain experience is by killing mobs. When a mob is killed you will see tiny green and yellow balls appear and move towards you.

experience points

These orbs represent experience points. When you kill a trader llama, you will gain 1-3 experience points.

Foods to Feed a Trader Llama

In Minecraft, you can restore a trader llama's health by feeding it and you can also speed up how fast a baby trader llama grows by feeding it food.

TIP: A trader llama will only eat food if its health bar is down or if it is a baby trader llama that is growing. If you try to feed a trader llama otherwise, it will not eat the food.

In Minecraft, these are the foods that you can feed a trader llama:

Name Health Restored Speeds Growth By
Wheat 2 health points
(heart x 1)
20 seconds
Hay Bale 10 health points
(heart x 5)
3 minutes
Note: The chart above shows the amount of health restored for each type of food eaten by a trader llama. It also displays the amount of time that it speeds up growth if you feed the food to a baby trader llama.
