Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 Version History
Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 is called the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part II and was released on November 30, 2021. It is the second part (ie: Part 2) to the Caves & Cliffs Update. It is considered a major update to the game that continues its focus on the redesign of caves, mountains, and cliffs with lots of new biomes.

Biome General Changes
- Lush Caves biome and Dripstone Caves biome now generate naturally in the game
- Various biome variants with similar features but different shapes have been merged into one, since the shape is controlled independently now:
- Dark Forest Hills is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Dark Forest biome
- Desert Hills is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Desert biome
- Desert Lakes is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Desert biome
- Jungle Hills is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Jungle biome
- Mesa Plateau is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Mesa biome
- Shattered Savanna Plateau is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Windswept Savanna biome
- Wooded Hills is no longer a unique biome, but has become part of the Forest biome

Status Effects
Changes
- Your list of "active" effects are now shown to the right when you view your inventory, instead of the left side
- When the inventory effects list is visible, it will be hidden from the game view to reduce screen clutter
- There's now two modes of seeing the list of effects - classic and compact and classic. Classic is the pre-existing list of effects which shows one effect after another. Compact is the single icon for each effect which is better for smaller screen sizes. The game will automatically switch between the these two modes to best suit your screen size.

Changes
General Changes
- Increased the world height and depth, adding 50% more vertical space to build and explore
- New cave generation to explore below your existing worlds
- Drastically updated and improved biome, cave, and ore generation
- The random number generator used for world generation has changed so expect all worlds to look different
- Enchanting tables now emit a low level of light
- Using shears on the end of a Cave Vine, Twisting Vine, Weeping Vine, or Kelp causes it to stop growing
- Sprinting is no longer reduced to walking when very minor angles of collision with a block (ie: gently brushing your sleeve against a wall)
- In the Stonecutter, a Block of Copper can be converted to four Cut Copper
